I missed that whole debate. so I don't even know what the sides were. But historically, we've done more combat without a declaration than with it. More convenient that way. Doesn't have all the international ramifications of an actual declaration.

The founders and that period of history weren't quite as commonly believed. More extreme, more colorful, more partisan, nastier. For example, the relevant parts of the USA Patriot Act (you KNOW any bill with a name like that is a shaft! How's that go? "Patriotism is the last resort of a scoundrel.") pale in comparison to the Sedition Act.

Politics today is sedate and decorous compared to the first 20+ years.
