NEW YORK (Reuters) - The missile strike on a car in Yemen that killed six suspected al Qaeda members was carried out under broad authority that President Bush (news - web sites) gave the CIA (news - web sites) over the past year to fight terrorism, The New York Times reported on Wednesday, citing senior government officials.
The president was not asked to authorize the specific strike, the officials told the Times, but Bush had been advised the CIA was pursuing a suspected al Qaeda leader who was killed in the blast, Qaed Senyan al-Harthi, the paper said.
Harthi is a suspect in the bombing of the U.S. destroyer Cole in Aden two years ago that killed 17 U.S. sailors...
