LL,

I'm almost a vegetarian and I avoid fats.

Since you are still posting, you must be getting energy from some source. Eliminating fat and protein leave carbohydrates. High carbohydrate diet is a primary recipe for the condition of high LDL, bad HDL/LDL ratio, and everything that follows.

My suggestion, since you are at a point of needing drugs is to re-examine your diet, since it is obviously not working for you. This book has a great chapter on cholesterol: amazon.com and so do all of the books by Barry Sears: amazon.com His first book is the best, the last one is good too. It does not conform to the conventional wisdom, but if the conventional wisdom lead you where it has, I guess you may be receptive to something different.
