My understnding is the the Afghanis were losing to the Russians until the US supplied them with Stingers. The Russians had adopted US Vietnam tactics- -air mobility for ground troops using helicopters. Those Stingers turned the Russian advantage into nice juicy targets.

And, according to what I've read, the Russians started have similar problems- -low morale, drug use, insubordination, fragging of officers.
