Speak to your accountant. I'm not sure, but you may be able to do what you want by 'shorting against the box' I've not looked into this for awhile, and Clinton either has, or is looking to do away with this stratagy. Simply put, you sell short the shares that you already own and lock in the price. The IRS views this as two seperate transactions (if the rules havn't changed), so there is no gain/loss untill you sell the shares and cover the short. You will incur fees, so talk to your broker also.

I'm not an expert in this, so maybe someone else can add to the disussion.
