Hi Sam,

The router will perform about the same with PLDs and replacement ASICs. The effective circuitry is the same.

There is nothing new here and this is the present, not the future. PLDS generally cost more than ASICS with the same functionality. PLDS are general solutions and ASICs specific solutions. PLDs offer flexibility and time to market advantages that make the increased cost worthwhile to bear. Most companies move from PLDs to ASICs as products mature. ALTR/XLNX provide programs to help customers move from PLDs to lower cost ASIC type chips. CSCO is saying that it will lower costs for older products currently in relatively stagnant markets characterized by little innovation and competition. New products will use PLDs.

Moore's Law continues to make very high volume general PLDs more price/performance competitive with lower volume specific ASICS. For very advance circuitry, ASICs will provide price advantages in fewer and fewer situations as the cost of all but the highest volume ASICs will exceed PLDs.

When in-system reprogrammability becomes more prevalent, replacing PLDs by ASICs will not be a consideration or will continue to be less likely.

I think this is a gift to investors who are holding junk which has jumped in this rally and who are considering a switch to quality (ALTR, XLNX).
