RE: HP Media Center [MC]

Nothing really new. It's just the most recent iteration in Akio Morita's "convergence" thesis [general purpose household infotainment appliance] that he began expounding in about 1980. It's a DVR (digital video recorder] inside a PC. Whether this new MSFT backed initiative will have legs or not I do not know, but MSFT has the budget to keep at it even if it's folly.

I already have 2 PVRs and a powerful PC so I do not expect to buy a MC. One PVR is a superb 1st generation Tivo; the other a combo PVR-satellite box made for Echostar using a cheap Linux Tivo knock-off design so inferior that it is pathetic. The difference is all in the software and the remote control design. Both TIVO and Echostar PVRs use Linux operating system and very similar hardware. One has good code, the other sucks.

[FD: small long positions both TIVO and MSFT]
