CEO expands on leading products and services that ARRIS Group provides Robert Stanzione, ARRIS Group ROBERT J. STANZIONE is President and Chief Executive Officer of ARRIS Group Inc.
Mr. Stanzione: Our company was named ANTEC until August 2001 when we acquired Arris Interactive, a joint-venture company that we (ANTEC) had started in 1995 with Nortel Networks as our partner. The Arris acquisition dramatically changed the nature of who we were. Therefore, we changed the name of our company from ANTEC to ARRIS. We have become a much more technology-driven company. We are focused on the cable MSOs around the world with a full portfolio of products. Our flagship products are being used by the cable operators to provide voice and high-speed data services on their networks. We also serve these same customers with a full suite of network infrastructure equipment.
TWST: Could you expand on those lead products and services you provide?
Mr. Stanzione: The lead product would be our Cornerstone Voice system, which is the world’s leading cable telephony equipment. Cornerstone is used by 25 to 30 operators around the world. We have installed over 2.8 million subscriber lines of this product and our customers have installed capacity to grow to over 15 million lines. Cornerstone has been a real success story for us. More recently, we have been developing Internet Protocol (IP) based products that are used for high-speed data access over cable networks. These new products form the platform for a new generation of voice services that will be packet or IP-based. And we are thrilled today to hear that, once again, we’ve passed CableLabs certification and qualification with DOCSIS 1.1, which is the specification and platform that is needed by the cable operators to offer enhanced services as well as voice services in the future.
TWST: How would you describe the competitive landscape that you face today?
Mr. Stanzione: This is a very competitive industry — we face competition constantly and always have and always will. There are some very fine competitors out there. We differentiate ourselves and stay out ahead of the parade by being very focused on the needs of our customers. We are focused solely on the needs of the MSOs, the Hybrid Fiber Coax (HFC) Network operators of the world. And we invest aggressively in data and voice and infrastructure technologies that our customers need to build their networks. I think we are unique in that respect. We have a very large and talented technology group. Over 40% of our employees are engineers.
TWST: As you look ahead the next several years at the way the markets are developing, what trends do you see emerging that are going to help steer the focus down the road?
Mr. Stanzione: Internet usage will continue to grow. The use of the network for demanding applications such as digital photographs and videos, music files, PowerPoint presentations, games and others that we haven’t thought of is accelerating a trend toward more symmetrical traffic on the networks — and much more traffic on the networks. That’s going to drive the need for more transmission capacity and also for ways for the operators to provide different levels of service to their customers. Looking out years from now, consumers won’t be charged one price for the high-speed Internet; they will be paying different levels of pricing for different levels of service. So someone who is frequently downloading large video files will pay more than someone who is just using their home computer to do e-mail.
