My understanding is that the pro-communist Afghan government begged the Soviets to assist.
Definitely true.

The Soviet leadership resisted the "invitation" for assistance, thinking that it would end up being a long drawn out Vietnam type war.
See? Humans are educable.
Well, some anyway.

They finally agreed to after being assured by Soviet Intelligence and the Soviet military that it would be an easy task.
Yeah. Right.
Who else said that? Westmoreland? Johnson? McNamara?

When things didn't go well, the Soviet military asked the Soviet leadership for just a few more troops to finish the rebels off. Probably sounds like a familiar story.
ROTFLMAO!!! "With just another 500,000 grunts....."

The Afghanis that you're talking about were the good guys [those trying to overthrow the government, i,e., the bad guys...that is until the good Afghanis won, i.e., the rebels, who eventually became the Taliban, who then eventually became the bad guys. ....
You mean like Iraq and Saddam? They made a similar trip from the Iran-Iraq War till now.

I've thought of late that the US might have been better off if we didn't assist the rebels. The Taliban may have never come to power.
Maybe we should make it illegal for anyone in the US military to ever leave US soil for any reason. THat may be the only way of solving this.

When the Russians were in Afghanistan, I can remember people crowing that it was now finally payback time for Vietnam. Wonder what they're saying now.
