The hamlet of Dusty is in the wheat and barley country on the road from Seattle to Pullman, the home of Washington State University. Mike Price, the Washington State football coach, says the population of Dusty ranges from 12 to 15, "depending on who died and who was born."
Now Dusty has a claim to fame. On the side of a 100-foot-high grain elevator there is a 25-by-15-foot poster of Jason Gesser, the Washington State quarterback. It was inspired by last year's 100-foot figure of Joey Harrington, the former University of Oregon quarterback, on a building near Madison Square Garden. The idea then was to promote Harrington for the Heisman Trophy (he would finish fourth in the voting).
The idea now is to promote Gesser for the Heisman and tweak that Oregon campaign. Oregon's investment (privately financed) was $250,000. Washington State's cost $2,500.
"We did it for fun, a spoof," Price said this week by telephone. "People who drive to our game have to see it. Jason is a bit embarrassed by it. I think he feels very humble."

It is so cool to spoof the big advertisers in the the big city.. Wazzu got very much more in national publicity for their 2.5K than UO with their 250K.. Very Smart.... The Cougs are out ahead again. <g>
