I've upgraded 2 computers with XP, and have only lost my scanner which was no big deal. Microsoft has a site (easy to find) listing compatible items, but the list is not complete. My xerox p3 laser printer is now using a drive for some other xerox printer, but it works. I found that on Driverguide.com (password all). I started over with oem copies of xp, but you'll want to purchase the upgrade version which costs more. If you have old stuff which is dos based it may not run using xp. XP has a DOS emulator, but it doesn't work with all dos programs that ran on the 98 platform.

For what it's worth, I upgraded to XP the week it came out, and haven't had as much as a glitch since. It's really really really good, and just might be worth the hassel you'll go through converting.
