Speaking strictly from personal belief, the SPLA would be more than happy to settle the issue by ballot box, but probably does not trust the NIF to honor that commitment (They suspect that the NIF would use the interim period to draft additional personal into their army and train them to replace soldiers lost in the last seven months of fighting...).

One thing I can assure you is that neither side wants to destroy the oil field infrastructure. Indeed short of some intense artillery bombardment, it is unlikely that the fighting would significantly damage the facilities....
