Laddering

Goldman Sachs Group (GS: news, chart, profile) and JP Morgan Chase (JPM: news, chart, profile) are facing possible penalties from the Securities and Exchange Commission on the practice of "laddering."

The term refers to directing shares of initial public offerings to clients who signaled that they planned to buy more shares.

Doing so would likely help share prices rise quickly and then fall sharply, leaving individual investors who could not get the deals at their offering prices with huge losses.
