I find that an evasive reply, I'm sorry to say.

One thought: People who report marital abuse in the U.S. or predatory priests do not have to go into hiding.

If some religions are characterized by the oppression of women, for example, there is no reason not to admit this and defend it--if the practicers of those religions think it's defensible. IMO.

It's reasonable to separate what is explicitly justified in the Quran and what isn't. But it's more 'interesting' than relevant to the victims of oppression, if membership in the religion makes one disproportionately likely to suffer from various horrors, or to be a perpetrator of them.
