If you can hit an artillery shell, you will have little problem hitting a missile. A test on a shell, is merely an impressive and less expensive showing.

There is little interest in shooting artillery out of the air. Why? Technology has far surpassed the need. Once a round is fired, the exact location of the piece is immediately identified and taken out. The risk of damage from on fire shell or one barrage is negligible. The most dangerous would be a collective fire-base assembled near the target. However, this is nearly impossible to assemble in this day and age. Long range guns are easily identified and destroyed
after one firing.

To make it simple: The test was "over the top" a grand demonstration of integrated laser tracking and associated applications of the laser itself. Serious development has been in the works for years.
