I tell you all this so that you don't pass off the buteyko method as simply another example of holistic medicine with sometimes questionable results.

I was reading along just fine until I got to the part about how your chest is supposed to go out when you exhale and in when you inhale. I had some difficulty getting past that paradigm shift. But I'll try the tape and let you know.

I am not sure what you saw. You might point it out to me. Essentially, what Buteyko promotes is diaphragm breathing, meaning your chest should hardly move at all. The movement should be between your stomach and your chest.......and the breathes you take in should be shallow as opposed to deep.

What they may have meant when they suggested that one's chest goes out when you exhale is that in relationship to your diaphragm it does appear to go out as your diaphragm goes in.......the reality is it's actually pretty stable. I might have said this before.....currently, I am working on reduced breathing in which diaphragm breathing is essential. Up til now, I did not have sufficient control over my breathing to go to reduced breathing 24/7. Now that I do, I am surprised how much improvement I have been able to make in one week's time. Already, I am noting an increase in my immune system's response to cuts and skin irritations. At this rate, in another week's time, I think I will be able to reduce my inhaler intake further.......which would be excellent news.
