As I recall, they did sell come gold, but they are also keeping their money supply growth pretty low--certainly in comparison with Australia, which J. Templeton mentioned as a possible alternative to the US dollar.

I guess you have checked out Tice's Safe Harbor Fund, haven't you? That has gold as well as non-U.S. bonds and notes.
