It is
beyond my comprehension that these "law and order" types refuse to admit
an international police force is needed..

For me, that isn't the issue. What IS the issue is WHAT international police force, who controls it, and what its powers are.

For example, look at the recent postings about the Eurpoean effort to restrict access to certain materials on the internet. They simply do not have our respect for freedom of speech. Since the internet is international, and since the US is in a minority among nations in cherishing true freedom of speech, it is far from inconceivable that within the foreseeable future some international police force would exert control over the internet and arrest, try, and imprison Americans who violated Eurpoean standards. The International Court is another example -- the concept may be laudatory, but the execution is potentially very dangerous to those who cherish civil liberties, and also to those of our milirary forces who may be sent into action in actions not approved in advance by the UN.

The devil, as always, is in the details, and at this point there do not seem to be many details that would support the existence of an international police force and judicial system which recognizes the same rights as we do.
