Chinese Firm Woos Hyundai Syscomm
by Kim Hee-sup (fireman@chosun.com)

China's Jinpeng group, a mobile telecommunications equipment manufacturer, has been looking for ways to acquire Korea's Hyundai Syscomm, a CDMA technology development firm. Hyundai Syscomm had earlier been spun off from its parent Hynix Semiconductor. It was then taken over by 3R, a Korean digital visual image equipment maker, for W59 billion.
3R announced Tuesday that it signed a memorandum of understanding, a non-binding preliminary draft with Jinpeng so that the two could jointly tap China's CDMA equipment and handset market.

The Chinese firm is expected to purchase a stake of about 25 to 30 percent in Hyundai Syscomm through an investment of US$10 million.

Jinpeng has reportedly disclosed its intention to take over Hyundai Syscomm in full, paying a keen attention to the Korean company's about 3,000 different patents on CDMA technology.

A 3R official explained that the Chinese firm has in fact requested a full take-over of Hyundai Syscomm, but 3R could not make any decision, as the transfer of core CDMA technologies to China would have a deep impact on the Korean telecommunications industry.
