I once worked for a mid sized company that was basically the largest player in its portion of the media field. The fellow who headed up their strategy at a corporate level told me he wanted to create a monopoly.
I spent hours explaining to him why it seems like a monopoly is a great thing to have, in the end you wind up losing everything, either due to arrogance, market shifts, or Federal investigation.

Personally, I'd rather be the largest of 3 big firms in a field that has a bunch of smaller players in it. The key is to not kill the smaller guys, but just keep taking your share, or slightly more, of the pie. You'll be in business longer, and while short term profits won't maximize, they will maximize over time.
