I realize that 9/11 was a big trauma for the aggregate majority of Americans who led a very sheltered life until then and honesly believed that nothing could ever touch them, but you really have to snap out of it now.
Please try to realize that attacking another sovereign country because you suspect that they might have WMDs is not the way to go about establishing security for your people. If anything, it will have exactly the reverse effect.
I disagree with you when you imply it is OK to attack another sovereign country whose head is, according to Mr Bush and yourself, "a maniac, a declared enemy of the US, a history of instability and lawlessness, no respect for life, and a stockpile of incredibly damaging agents".
Re "a maniac": I see you believe Saddam is a "maniac". This shows just how powerful the US media is in forming the opinions of American public. I do not remember seeing anything in the news over the past decade that could suggest he is maniac, mad, or even just mentally disturbed.
Re "a declared enemy of the US": I am not sure if the US declaring a guy his enemy is good enough reason to invade a country.
Re "a history of instability and lawlessness, no respect for life": So his regime is military and autocratic. Not a democracy. Little human rights. Not a place you and I would like to live in. Still, I do not see how this is a compelling argument to invade a sovereign country. If it were reason enough, the US should have invaded quite a few countries by now, some of which it has supported, by the way - remember Pinochet, anyone? :)
Re "a stockpile of incredibly damaging agents": How do you know about these, hmm? As far as I know, the last time the inspectors came back they reported there was nothing to be seen. So it is all guesswork, isn't it? Meanwhile, the country has been so effectively contained that there were epidemics because they could not find the chemicals to sanitize the water. In reality, nobody can say Iraq has an arsenal of WMDs.
On the other hand, we know for a fact that other countries has WMDs. North Korea, for example, has announced that it has a nuclear program in place, going fine, thank you very much. You know Russia has a lot of WMDs. If you ask me, the most hostile-looking country on this planet right now is USA and boy DO they have a huge "stockpile of incredibly damaging agents".
But I digress...
So what I was trying to say so far was: 1) Iraq's regime is not "nice". OK. So don't go and live there. It is not a reason to invade a sovereign country. 2) Nobody knows if Saddam has weapons and he has not shown any hostility over the past decade. So there is no reason to invade his country.
... and this is what I will add as a final point:
3) It is very easy to manufacture chemical weapons. Even if you find all the weapons on earth has, it does not mean they cannot manufacture them again.
So the US is currently playing the bully because it is the only superpower left on earth. What you guys seem to be missing is that sooner or later the other guys unite against the bully. This is why it is not a good idea to be a bully :)
I invite you to reflect on the following: The empires that have lasted are those who ruled with the approval of the rest, not those that have bullied even their allies. |
