NZ forces join hunt for al Qaeda

New Zealand is stepping up its contribution to the campaign against terrorism by boosting military deployments to the Middle East.

The cabinet has approved the use of an Anzac frigate, an Orion aircraft and 242 members of the Navy and Air Force to track down Al Qaeda and the Taleban.

The Prime Minister Helen Clark says the frigate HMNZS Te Kaha will sail shortly from West Australia to take part in a Canadian-led force patrolling the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Oman.

Clark says the Maritime Interdiction Operation gathers intelligence and boards ships as part of Operation Enduring Freedom launched after the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Clark says the deployment is in addition to the SAS and a Hercules aircraft already in Afghanistan.

Clark maintains New Zealand forces will not be used to support any war against Iraq.

The Navy is committed to keeping a frigate in the Gulf until next July.
