Well, frankly this strikes me as a very silly comment. If Marc Andreessen is actually endorsing, rather than just repeating, these comments, it shows him to have a pretty narrow view of the world, because what that describes is the way things have happened in just about one and only one arena, software. In fact, really significant innovations very commonly come out of big companies, and other Big organizations (e.g. NASA and the military). IBM's development of atomic force microscopy and its subsequent implications for nanotechnology as described in some of the preceding posts is an excellent example.
