Well, HPQ don't make their own consumer PCs either.

And the HPQ warranty isn't worth much on machines purchased through WMT. I was there when we did the first deals with them and my understanding is that not much has changed. They squeeze so hard on price that we had to limit it to 30 days of phone support and 90 days of send-in repair service. We had to put together different models with cheaper components and an entire different warranty structure to support WMT's price demands. Many in the organization (including me) felt that we were completely sacrificing brand reputation in order to ship more volume.

I think WMT can continue to serve their customers with the same (lousy) level of product quality without involving HPQ or anything else. And I'm not convinced that it is necessarily bad for HPQ in the longer term.
