U.S. war plans: Blast away Saddam's support
Mon Nov 11, 7:40 AM ET
Tom Squitieri and Dave Moniz USA TODAY

President Bush (news - web sites) has signed off on plans for a military strike against Iraq that rest heavily on the assumptions that the Iraqi military will not fight for long and that Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) will capitulate.

The plan, according to Bush administration and British officials, envisions avoiding battles for Baghdad and Tikrit, Saddam's hometown. It would use as many as 250,000 U.S. and allied forces to destroy or seize key locations and pressure Saddam to fold. The goal would be to quickly show Iraqi military leaders that it would be futile to resist, in the hope they would depose Saddam.
