Nokia Unveils 1X Color Phone

[ <ggg> NOK's loser entry for Korea - no doubt with Telson ]

Nokia yesterday unveiled a new CDMA2000 1X mobile handset.

The Finish telecom giant released its Nokia 8587 phone with backlit keypad, wide color-screen and a WAP-based Internet browser.

Eero Laitinen, general manager of Nokia’s Korean unit, said the new color-screen handset will appeal to Korean consumers.

The phone weighs 95 grams with a standard battery and will only be available to SK Telecom customers initially.

A Nokia spokeswoman said the retail price hadn’t been decided yet as it is customary in the Korean wireless market for service operators to determine mobile handset prices.

The new 1X phone is hoped to rekindle Nokia’s sagging fortunes in the Korean market, in sharp contrast to the Finnish company's global number-one handset manufacturing position, holding 34 percent of the global market last year.

Analysts say Nokia’s introduction of a 1X color-screen phone is a well overdue attempt to attract the attention of local customers.

``It is unclear whether the Nokia 8587 color phone will appeal to trend-conscious Korean customers,’’ said one analyst at a local brokerage.

Korea has some 31 million wireless customers with three operators _ SK Telecom, KTF and LG Telecom. Currently, CDMA2000 1X phones are being used daily by millions of tech-savvy consumers.
