Korea's 3G Handset Subscribers Reaches Close to 15 Mln
Nov 12 2002

Nearly 15 million people in South Korea subscribed to
third-generation (3G) mobile technology cdma2000 1x as of
the end of October, accounting for 46 per cent of the nation's
total handset users, business sources said Tuesday.

The total number of subscribers has reached 14.88 million,
up nearly five million from the end of June when the number
exceeded the 10 million level for the first time since the
country began to commercialize the 3G service in May 2001,
the first in the world to offer such services.

In the reported period, SK Telecom Co. had 8.87 million, or
75 per cent of its total handset members, cdma2000 1x
subscribers, followed by KTF with 4.44 million (44 per cent)
and LG Telecom Ltd. with 1.58 million (33 per cent), sources
said.

If the current upward trend continues, the total number of
cdma2000 1x subscribers is expected to easily surpass 15
million this year.

Cdma 2000 1x, capable of offering 144 Kbps transmission
speed, is one of the five international mobile
telecommunication-2000 (IMT-2000) standard technologies
approved by the International Telecommunication Union
(ITU).
