Oracle, H-P Strike Software Pact

Oracle Corp. and Hewlett-Packard Co. plan to unveil a three-year, world-wide agreement to jointly develop and market so-called middleware software based on Oracle's 9I application server. The announcement could come as early as Tuesday. As part of the deal, H-P will offer customers who buy some of its products a special free version of Oracle's 9I application server. Oracle is looking to develop new revenue streams as its database market has seen decline over the last year. One thrust of that effort has been to seek more market share in the application-server sector against competitors such as BEA Systems Inc. and International Business Machines Corp. The Redwood Shores, Calif., company's development and marketing agreement with Hewlett-Packard may help its application server gain more customers. H-P, of Palo Alto, Calif., earlier this year also signed a similar agreement to distribute and sell BEA Systems' software.
