The difference between (current) liberals and conservatives is that liberals have difficulty recognizing that there are hard choices and inescapable exigencies. (They were once more hard- headed than that). I have argued about the decision to use the atomic bomb in Japan countless times, and it always amounts to a refusal to admit that a direct invasion was unavoidable, and would result in worse carnage. There simply had to be a way out! Similarly, liberals will not admit that we cannot enhance security without overcoming some procedural scruples that hamstring law enforcement, but instead think that any suggestion of trade- off means that we are giving up our "liberties". So, my proposal is to require schools to have "toughening up" classes, that force students to confront situations where there is no good solution, only the choice of lesser evils, until they become accustomed to the idea that life is tough......
