Advanced Micro Devices has released a new mobile processor and announced that the chip is available in notebooks immediately, which breaks the trend the company has set with its last few processor launches.

The AMD Mobile Athlon XP 2200+ can be found in the Fujitsu Siemens Amilo A-x600-series notebooks in Europe. Interested buyers in the United States will be able to find notebooks with the processor on the Home Shopping Network Web site. The site on Monday features an AMD-equipped Excelente notebook from Ashton Digital.

It has taken some time for vendors to use AMD's last several desktop CPUs in new systems, with some processors announced in August just starting to appear in PCs now.

AMD has also delayed the release of several new members of its CPU family. The holdup is apparently hampering AMD's ongoing market battle with chip giant Intel. AMD's processors are often the budget favorite, though the company continuously strives to make faster chips.

The new Mobile Athlon XP 2200+ will be priced at $186 in 1000-unit quantities sold to vendors. AMD's current performance leader among mobile processors, the Mobile Athlon XP 2000+, is priced at $345. The lower price for the new chip should mean that prices are set to decline across AMD's Mobile Athlon XP line.
