The problem with SS is that people just don't understand it.

I can attest to that. People don't understand aspects of it that are much simpler than what is being discussed here. A while back I all but started a brawl in the retirement community where my dad lives by taking the position with some of the residents that the money they're getting from social security is not a return on what they paid in. They were quite insulted at the notion of living off taxes paid by others. SS, after all, is just like collecting interest from the bank on their CD's, doncha know. ;)
