Walter Mondale is a former Vice President of the US and at the time he was a candidate for the United States Senate from one of the two major political parties.

What possible reason to suspect him of being a potential threat to airport safety?

I'll answer. None. Less than zero.

So why put him through extra security? Because it's a rule, and rules are rules, no matter whether they make any kind of sense.
