Dividend or buy back? Guesses on GSM1x?

Screw the dividend. Authorize a buy back, and leave it gather dust. Fund a US do network with carriers, ISPs, MVNOs and NextWave's spectrum.

Regarding the GSM1x trial, the smart money appears to be on Unicom. I think it's MII and Mobile. If for no other reason, Mobile trialing GSM1x would be a powerful bargaining chip with the 3GSM guild and wCDMA. And there is no hurry with a possible wCDMA upgrade - so it's a good strategic use of time. Also, Mobile can cover its bases in the case that wCDMA's prospects continue to languish.

I also recall comments by IJ - I think early this year - to the effect that Unicom was not a GSM1x candidate. I can't fully understand why - with upgrades and continued buildout of its cdma network and resultant capacity - Unicom would see the overlay as best use of funds. The multimode handsets due mid year 03 may provide sufficient integration - without the overlay infrastructure expense. Rudimentary services may be dedicated over time to the legacy GSM network, and used to fill in coverage holes in a fashion similar to AMPS in the US.
