So you're saying they fudged things to make it appear as though they beat? Here is what confused me from Briefing.com:

4:05PM Applied Materials beats by a penny (AMAT) 14.70 -0.37: Reports Q4 (Oct) earnings of $0.09 per share, $0.01 better than the Multex consensus of $0.08; revenues rose 14.3% year/year to $1.45 bln vs the $1.47 bln consensus.

4:37PM Applied Materials says environment not expected to improve (AMAT) 14.70 -0.37: -- Update -- On conference call, says the fiscal Q4 results were achieved in a very, very difficult environment that it doesn't expect to improve anytime soon... notes that despite increasing DRAM prices and decline in inventories, it continues to wait for an inflection point... AMAT +0.10 at 14.80

But what really hurt was this: AMAT Applied Materials guides fiscal Q1 below consensus (14.70 -0.37) -- Update -- On conference call, says it expects Q1 (Jan) revenues to be below Q4 levels by at least 20%, which equates to revenue of approx. $1.16 bln; current Multex consensus is $1.39 bln... says it expects to incur a small loss in fiscal Q1, which includes charge for headcount reduction; current Multex consensus is profit of $0.07... separately, expects Q1orders to be roughly 20% below Q4 levels... AMAT -0.60 at 14.10

Of course there was a reason why they let those workers go. Hmmmm, A slow down in orders.
