Dell takes switches to Europe

Dell is to begin selling its PowerConnect Ethernet Layer 2 switches in Europe, and will focus on the high-end 24-port, 2Gbps device. It has sold two million ports in 14 months in the US, thereby validating the opportunity, it says. It claims they'll cost half the price of equivalent rival systems. Dell has been supplying customers with Nortel, Extreme and Enterasys gear, and says it will continue to sell it where required. It says it started out targeting small businesses with low-end plug-and-play versions of the switches, but is now focused on the higher-end managed switch opportunity. It sells Brocade switches for FC SANs, but doesn't plan to offer its own storage switches until the industry becomes standardized.
