Ted, <I believe bin Laden is playing us.>
That's for sure.

But what does that have to do with the elections or the timing relative to the elections? Would we have reacted any differently had it been released before the elections?

Tenchusatsu, prior to the tape most thought he was dead. The administration didn't say that but they hinted at it. There have been suggestions that the al Qaeda was badly beaten and would take a long time to recover; that bin Laden's son was taking over the leadership but he is only in his early 20's.

Naturally, the Bush administration benefited from this kind of press. Bush was the hero.....doing the hard job, making America safe, getting rid of the bin Ladens of the world etc. He doesn't look quite the hero now. It may or may not have effected people and the way they voted, probably not but if you're bin Laden and you want Bush to continue his aggressive policies, then why take the chance. The more bin Laden gets Bush to act out, the more recruits he gets and the more money.......apparently enough to get him a not so cheap, dialysis machine.
