the answer, but one can make a counter argument a la Mish.

If (it's decided that) QQQ is going to close above max-pain for sure (who knows?), then the invisible grubby hands behind the NDX have to cough up shares for the callers. One way to get the said shares cheap is to hold the index down as much as possible and collect the requisite number of shares. Once that is done, you can let the index go (up?).

Just pondering another imponderable,
