Is that the kind of stuff in money market funds? (All my brokerage money-markets are US government security-backed. Interest income is negligible anyway and what I want is complete safety.)

Sounds like the whole system has evolved into one huge scam, though no doubt the people in the middle of it think it's all just business as usual.
