As a matter of electoral reality, no one is going to turn the clock back to 1830 and start again. I would like to see that Department of Education abolished, but even then, I know that there are certain functions, like monitoring national statistics, that will remain. I would like to get rid of the Department of Transportation, but I do not anticipate eliminating the federal role in air traffic control or the investigation of crashes. I would like to eliminate the Departments of Commerce and Labor, but I know that some residual functions will remain, like handling arbitration. And I do not know if one can kill the departments and consolidate to my taste in the first place.
