I can't comment on the wisdom of dropping support for older products, but I'm pretty sure that Oracle licenses cover upgrades. So unless this forces people to buy new products, all this does is allow Oracle to decrease support costs. In MSFT's case, forcing people to newer versions of Windows can cause them to have to buy something.

As for Ray Lane, I can't recall him saying anything that smart when he was with Oracle, and since then he's been very negative, but I can't recall him being right about anything that wasn't completely obvious. I believe he wants to give the impression that he quit over differences in strategy, when what happened is that Ellison fired him.
