The treaty is more than what you describe.......Article 5 states that if one of the member nations is attacked, then all are deemed under attack

But it doesn't specify exactly what they have to do.

You need to read Article 5 again......its seems fairly specific to me......the other member nations are to come to the defense of a member when it is under attack.

More importantly it does not say that members are required to attack any one another member attacks. Serbia did not attack or threaten the territory of any NATO country.

That's not what I suggested. The treaty says that when the "territorial integrity" of any member nation is threatened, action may be taken. The break up of Yugoslavia and the ensuing civil war threatened the territorial integrity of several member nations.

What he said is that our actions were more honorable because we had nothing to gain materially by
entering the Balkan conflict.

I don't think it makes it more honorable. Honorable actions are honorable whether or not our countries interest is involved. It can even be argued that it is dishonorable for the nations leadership to order men to war when our nation's interests are not threatened.

I wasn't commenting on your position; I was simply clarifying what Al was saying.......you had put a different spin on it.
