A slight clarification - Intel will have to drop by 40% of the amount of your CAPITAL GAINS for you to break even, not 40% of the current stock price.

If your cost basis is zero, then your statement would be correct, but if it is not, then the required fall in price could be much less.

Nevertheless, you bring up a very good point. If your capital gain is large, the stock will have to fall significantly before you can get back in at your after tax breakeven level.
