It's demanded anyway, but I tell those asking they can't have it, and they should know that, and they back off. Sears called us at home some time ago offering a Sears Credit Card by phone. When asked for my SSN, I replied 'You are not allowed to reject us for this card on the basis that I will not provide my SSN to you.' She asked me to hold for a moment and then returned with ' That's OK. My supervisor said we will get it some other way." --fl@yikes.com
