NYC Anti-tax campaign

by Philip Lentz

The real estate industry is gearing up to launch a million-dollar grassroots campaign to fight any increase in the city property tax.

The effort would include radio ads, automated phone calls and direct mail to 500,000 single-family home owners across the city. The mailing would include preaddressed postcards that home owners could send to individual City Council members opposing a tax hike.

The Real Estate Board of New York, which is spearheading the effort, is hoping to lead a coalition that includes business groups, civic associations, labor unions and home owner groups. The campaign is patterned after a similar effort conducted in 1991 to oppose a property tax proposed by then-Mayor David Dinkins. The protest led to a smaller tax hike being enacted.

In addition to opposing a large property tax increase, the campaign is also expected to propose an agenda of spending cuts to help close the budget gap.
