IMO this is a very great threat to the democratic process.

Why do you think voter apathy is so high? There are many reasons, but a major one is the feeling that special interests with their bags full of money have taken over government and the average citizen's voice cannot be heard.

This is not an idle or unreasonable belief. Even a cursory look at the federal legislative process makes crystal clear that lobbyists and special interests with enough money can get legislation written or revised in a way that rewards them enormously. All because of the money the pour into the political process under the guise of exercising their free speech rights.
