Can I throw in my two cents on the Atlantic cooling thing?

I used to do programming for oceanographic and climate research for a living and the North Atlantic is subject to recurring "Great Salinity Anomalies" which persist on decadal time scales. They were used to explain amongst other things the collapse of the Grand Banks Cod fishing industry. Yeah, those dredgers are totally benign.

A freshening of the North Atlantic has been hypothesized as an adjunct of global warming for some years. Normally, warm, salty water (out of the Mediterranean no less) travels north, cools, sinks, and spreads out in "the great conveyer belt".

Fresher North Atlantic water from ice melting or increased fresh water input means no sinking, and the Gulf Stream is severely weakened leading to locally colder conditions in Europe and a whole host of other effects.

Personally, I think it's part of a natural variability process with weak climatic ramifications, and the scientists are fear mongering trying to pad their travel budgets.

Which shows you how much I think of oceanographers and climate scientists.
