The Internet is a packet-switched network. You need a circuit-switched network to ensure proper voice communication. Netphones work today only because there's sometimes unused capacity. If they became popular, the Internet would quickly be overrun. So, don't expect them to become popular.

The bandwidth problem still needs to be solved. Don't count on the telcos and cable companies to change that anytime soon. They enjoy thier monopolies too much.
