I was having dinner with my in-laws last night. Patti was out of town and they invited me up for dinner. I gave the Pizza deliver guy the night off, and grabbed an Ancient Vine Zinfandel from Le petit cellar.
During the post-dinner Canasta game, the topic turned to world affairs and politics. My father-in-law has trouble seeing eye to eye. He only sees out of his left eye and I am only using my right eye. I blew a few hands of Canasta while we debated "What if Al Gore had won in 2002?”
A sudden shudder went through me. If I knew what would happen on 9-11 and in the subsequent months, during the 2000 election I would not thought it close to possible that GB2.0 would be up for the challenge. He transformed himself and then met the challenge head on. He has even begun to impress me with his recent victories.
I can watch it happen on the 9/11 'what happened on that Day" programmes. Bush is in a schoolroom watching the WTC on school TVs while be briefed by Cheney on the phone. He writes a short speech to the nation in crayons. At this point the man's life transformed. In his heart and gut he recognized that the US was a very bad and very long war with evil people. Before he left that school he had committed his life to winning that war.
I think that Great Leaders are made by Great Circumstances. Lincoln was an ordinary guy; it was the circumstances that made him great. He surrendered his ego to the mission and became the President that would save the country everyday.
I think that George Bush is becoming a Great Man because he is starting to surrender to the circumstances. He is truly a man transformed.
The Al Gore I saw in the 2000 would have been a disaster but I think he would have risen to the challenge and left his ego behind him. Al Gore would have let it go and been an extraordinary president.
The president is called to greatness and it isn't possible to be great if you don't get that call.
