Yes, the Hebron settlers are extremists in anybody's book. However, last night they were just walking home from the Cave of the Patriarchs. Do you support the Palestinian efforts to shoot them?

Israel has no legal sovereign rights in the occupied territory which is recognized by the international community. Any right of passage in the occupied territory is earned solely from Israel's military conquest. Historical and religious claims to Eretz Israel are irrelevant. Within this context, any armed militant Israeli settlers in Hebron is living with the constant threat of violent reprisal from the oppressed indigenous population whose perception is their olive trees are uprooted, their water supply diverted, their homes demolished, and their land stolen. This is not a moral judgement but an observation. Under these circumstances, settlers in Hebron become viable military targets because it is their presence which cause these chain of events to unfold.

You already know how I detest violence. I do not support the Palestinians' effort to shoot them any more than I support the radical settlers' attempt to colonize Hebron. But I will add this. The occupation of the West Bank has marginized the Israelis' ability to defend themselves behind the Green Line. Valuable resources and manpower which should be devoted for the protection of Israeli civilians are being diverted to protect the narrow interests of a few religious, ideological zealots in the occupied territories. IDF are reduced into official babysitting or safeguarding chores of a disruptive settler population when they should be used for the security of Israel and hunting down militant terrorists. Money spent on maintaining the colonies in the occupied territories should be used to benefit Israelis at home. The colonization of the occupied territory is leading to the moral corruption and fragmentation of Israeli society.
