If you've been ruined financially by returns of -14.39% in the DOW, or -27.65% in the Nasdaq, or -20.75% in the S&P since the beginning of the year, then they shouldn't have been in the market to begin with. Markets can move down this much and more but they have always come back. There are many reasons why this is so but as far as I'm concerned, capitalism, wherein every person is trying their best to do a good job, drives the market higher over time. Inefficiencies and mismanagement are driven out and the best companies continue - its a darwinian model.
